What the numbers show
Average weekly hours actually worked per employee in the public sector is currently reported for 73 countries. The highest value is 51.24 in Bhutan; the lowest is 28.27 in Austria.
The median across all reporting countries is 39.12, and the mean is 38.62.
The gap between the highest and lowest reporting country is a factor of about 2.
Over the past decade 33 countries rose and 38 fell. The largest increase was in Palestine (up 44.8%), and the largest decrease in Rwanda (down 20.8%).

About this data
With the aim of promoting international comparability, statistics presented on ILOSTAT are based on standard international definitions wherever feasible and may differ from official national figures. This series is based on the 13th ICLS definitions. For time series comparability, it includes countries that have implemented the 19th ICLS standards, for which data are also available in the Work Statistics -- 19th ICLS (WORK) database. Data on hours of work are presented, whenever possible, on the basis of the average number of hours of work per week, and with reference to hours worked in the main (paid) job regardless of working time arrangements (e.g. full-time and part-time).
